Round 3 - Pick 2: Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M (Minnesota Vikings)
By - NFL_Mod
Last year the Packers took Love in the first round to spark a Rodgers MVP season. This is the Dollar General version of that.
Kirk wins NVP
Kirk, you just won NVP. What does this all mean to you?
Well, first of all through the power of god anything’s possible. So jot that down.
If I win NVP, I win NVP.
You botched the quote a decent amount but good reference
Do you have a NVP? Didn't think so
I love Dollar General.
Cousins NVP confirmed.
lmao annoying, but accurate
Kirk Cousins: "FRICK!" 😂
[Schefter] Reigning Vikings QB Kirk Cousins is so disgruntled with the Minnesota Vikings that he has told some within the organization that he does not want to return to the team, league and team sources told ESPN on Thursday.
If I leave, I leave
I audibly lol’d
If he channels that anger into an MVP season I'd be down
And there was much rejoicing "yay"
So much cap space for activities.
I think I saw the other day that he has the largest free agent contract in NFL history. What a guy
I love how I read this in the monty python voices complete with the muddled "yay" Thanks for the laugh mate.
You ~~like~~ vike that
“I DON’T LIKE THAT!”
YOU LIKE THAT!
HELL YEAH BROTHER CHEERS FROM MY COUCH
Did... did you watch any A&M games? The kid is all heart, I’ll give him that, but he has the accuracy of a stormtrooper.
Edit: Just saw your username, now I’m even more confused lol
I’ll recommend this: go back at watch A&M cs Clemson in 2018 or the 2018 LSU game that year in 7OT.
I’ll be honest - Kellen isn’t the best QB, he has the skills but man does he overthink it on the field and just struggles in the play making ability via arm. His legs will help a lot. But I truly think coaching and sitting on the bench to study, he can be decent.
I’ll leave it at this, when Kellen is on during the random crunch time that he’s on, he is lights out. Great touch, ball placement and reads. But getting that Kellen to come out is a difficult task and he struggled to prove it vs accomplished teams like Bama or during games we needed him to play lights out.
But I still think he’s got some potential with kicking the tires. Get Gary to talk to him and coach him up and see what you get.
Don't know if your description is accurate of Mond, but if it's true, it sounds a lot like Trubisky.
So we should have traded up to #2 to snag him?
Bear hunting season is Sept 1-Oct 18 in Minnesota. That was murder.
People have compared Mond to being a robot. Now imagine points in time where he's basically a combination of a Terminator, Cylon, and Agent Smith all in one and just lighting people (elite competition) the fuck up. He's not always like that though
Mond is a guy people sleep on quite a bit. He has the ability to be a career journeyman type of player is my opinion but not a franchise quarterback.
It’s a 3rd round QB pick? Y’all are acting like we picked him 1st overall. I wouldn’t mind if Mond sat for 2 years behind Kirk.
Also we have 3 more 3rd rd picks
Cb, Cb, Cb, trade up, Cb
Mond is who most Bears fans were hoping for in the second if we missed out on the first round guys. You guys did well.
Seriously, it’s like this sub doesn’t think a team is allowed more than 1 QB at a time.
Yeah, I’ve got no clue what that’s about.
I'm an aggie who watched him for 4 years and while he's incredibly frustrating at times, he really did improve every year which is rare. If he say behind kirk a couple years I think he could be an average to above average qb.
Absolutely nothing wrong with getting a guy into your system and having him develop in a no-stress backup role. If he becomes a stud that's phenomenal, if he tops out as a career backup, that's cool and it was a 3rd round pick.
Yeah nothing wrong with this and it implies nothing we didnt already know about kirk’s future. Its always good to have a young qb on the roster. You might accidentally draft dak or brady
#RUN ON QBS
Jesus, you weren't wrong.
Use our free pick from the jets to take an attempt at QB, why not
Yeah I dont get the outrage or the Kirk trolling comments. Solid project QB which is something we haven't had in a long time, and he's obviously not a threat to take Kirk's spot in the immediate future
What does Kirk have left? 2 years on that deal? Sounds like a solid amount of time for a backup to sit.
*Packers fan legit not trolling*
Yeah I mean 2 years should be long enough to figure out if he can take over the starting job and in the meantime he’s far and away our best option for a backup. I wanted him as a potential developmental guy.
Yeah I think 2 years guaranteed. The time was probably right if they felt strongly about a particular guy, but 2 years is a bit longer than usual to sit. He'd be 23 at that point, so still pretty young. It worked out for you guys with ARodge, though obviously he was very highly touted and Favre was *juuuuust* a bit better than Kirk haha
Edit: I say all this as a Kirk fan. I think he's a solid QB and deserves to keep his spot for at least this season. We never take on QB projects so thats why I'm all for it, and it tells me the front office feels strongly about him
I think at the very least he'll be a backup with the armstrength to give guys like thielen and jefferson a chance and the ability to scramble and run if the pass becomes a liability. Even if he never improves Id rather have someone who can run the ball hand it to dalvin than sean mannion. And if he does improve the ceilings pretty high.
This is who I wanted the Bears to take if they couldn’t get a top 5 QB. He’s gonna be decent.
Exactly....I mean its worth a shot. Worse come to worse it doesn't work out but it was basically a free pick.
We need a backup QB anyways. It's not exactly what I expected but it might work out, good to have contingency plans at QB.
Ringer guy liked mond as the 3rd best qb in this draft
I wonder if this is one of those threads we look back in and make fun of the comments
Idk enough about mond to say if it will or won’t be but the way everyone is reacting makes for a juicy hindsight thread if it works out
For as much as people want to talk about the mythical "sit behind an established QB and learn for a year or two to develop" I don't see why they would hate this pick when it was essentially completely free from our trade with the Jets
We traded pick 14 (Alijah Vera Tucker) for picks that got us Christian Darrisaw, Kellen Mond, and Wyatt Davis.
You love to see it.
Rick's slickness knows no bounds.
Yeah, people mock it, but I like him here. Has all the physical tools, but super streaky. With a 3rd round price tag, thats a good risk to take.
I was just thinking this. I legitimately think he has a really high ceiling.
Same. He can sit behind cousins for a couple years. An underrated spot for a rookie to land.
He definitely does have a high ceiling, but getting there could be difficult. There were times at A&M that he looked stellar. Most of the time though, he did not. It was frustrating as a fan.
I'll allow it.
God I fucking hope so
It’s why I never make fun of divisional teams when they draft QBs.
My favorite is the Mahomes thread: https://i.imgur.com/yR9P7p9.jpg
Maybe if it was a team that can develop a QB. Our franchise is historically bad at it.
Sure, but the endless love of Kirk and Julie has to count for something
Kirk cousins about to co-host Jeopardy with Rodgers
What is “you like that?”
What it "I don't vike that!"
Honestly they'd probably make a good comedy duo. The atheist bachelor and the christian family man. It practically writes itself
Sure ok yeah
We are getting both Kirk and Rodgers
Broncos said fuck it and signed a 45 year old drew Brees. him, Brady, Rodgers and cousins all played one quarter each every game, the rest was spent drinking lots of warm water while reminiscing about what their grandsons were doing. They won 4 superbowls.
Honestly I only see Brady playing in Tampa for 5-10 more seasons tops, who knows where he’ll choose to win Super Bowls after that
AND MY AXE!
And my bow
Sure but you guys keep forgetting that the prophecy states you can have Rodgers for only one season and then he needs to go to the Vikings. That's how it works, you can't twist that fate.
You got Mr. Shoulder Pads
I don’t Mond it. He’s definitely gonna make a Kellen as a backup in the NFL
You had that ready for if we drafted him, didn’t you?
I still can't believe we got the guy we WANTED
Get off the stage
Zillla you’re cool but delete this
Angry Kirk is best Kirk
It's Kirk Cousins MVP season 😎
you like that?
Very welmed huh
Yeah this is whatever I guess.
...is drafting a QB in the third round worth overreacting over? This thread makes it sound like it was a first round pick.
I think the overreaction is a big meme? I mean, people know this is Mannion in shambles, not Kirk in shambles, right?
Especially when we just snagged 2 more 3rds in our trade down yesterday. Don't mind the pick at all.
Seriously, based on our first round this is almost a free pick
Exactly, free capital to use on a developmental guy with huge potential. The more I am seeing us draft the more I like it, it's a great lottery ticket and we didn't have to really neglect anything to get him.
No, we have a bunch of third round picks and he will be sitting behind Kirk for at least a couple years. This is not like front page news but pretty decent value pick. We had basically no backup QB either.
Meh. Packer fans think this is somehow the same as the Love pick so whatever. Their QB wants nothing to do with them. We’ll throw them a bone at the moment.
A 3rd round pick that was free from the Darislaw trade
Really high ceiling but definitely a big risk. A team like Minnesota is a perfect landing spot for him. He's got franchise QB upside but he's nowhere near ready. This way he can sit for a while behind an established starter and be a backup, which they needed, and *maybe* they'll be able to coach Mond up to be the future. I like the pick.
I really don't hate it considering we have 3 more picks this round and I think 3 in the 4th anyway. Besides I think Kirk is going to ask for absurd money after next year when his contract is up.
Kirk asking for absurd money and doing everything possible to maximize it is the single most bankable trait he has
And I don't blame him. Players should go for the bag. I just don't want him eating a ton of our cap because I think he's pretty good but not someone who can do it all himself.
“Gosh darn it!” - Kirk Cousins
With how many 3rd and 4th round picks we have I'm happy with this pick. High upside who could develop to QOTF. And given the capital invested we can easily move on with a 1st round rookie in future drafts. Just need to fill holes with the next few picks
Isn't this Simm's guy ?
Let's see if it works
Had Mond ahead of Fields I think
- Mega reach! Undraftable!!!
- Great value for the Vikings!!
Needed a backup sooooo I don't hate it. But you could get more then a backup here
Backup and potential QB of the future?
Yeah that’s what this is
At the very least hopefully this means Sean Mannion will not be back as the backup. I hate having the backup that is just consistently bad. I want the backup that's inconsistent but can actually win you games if your QB goes down.
You guys have stolen my LT and now my QB pick 🥺🥺..
Good luck though!
Dude I love Mond’s upside
Mond’s smart, tough, and very athletic. Hopefully he develops a deep ball and is quicker to make decisions. We were frustrated with him up until this year.
He could secretly become a NFL QB, he needs time to develop though. Not a bad spot for him IMO
Yeah he'll sit behind kirk for 1 or 2 years. Like that part
Mond has very good upside tbh. He has a rocket arm, improved year on year in college which is always good to see.
And gets to sit for a few years great developmental QB pick for the Vikings
I feel like in the first 3 rounds your drafting with the hope they eventually start. Which is wierd cause your FO seems set on Cousins
We’re set on Cousins for the next 2 seasons but this move makes it clear they’re thinking about potentially parting ways after that.
They’ll keep Mond on the bench behind Cousins for two years and develop him and then in 2023 they’ll choose between Mond, Cousins, and moving on entirely.
Not bad for one 3rd round pick.
Also very very cheap for the position, if we move on from Kirk while he is still on a rookie contract we will be paying him like 1M per year only. We are basically hoping it's a situation like Dak Prescott.
We are set on Cousins, but injuries happen and our backups are like Rhett Bomar and...nobody.
Cousins never gets injured. That's his thing. Power from Julie
Only for a couple more years. 2023 Kirk's a UFA. Good backup, possible future is probably what they're thinking
I feel like 2-4 is “we think they could be a good back up” plan B for starting QB of the future.
We have 4 3rd round picks, it's pretty low investment to try this and if it pans out has huge upside. He is definitely not slated to start this year or even next most likely.
I think he could be a starter for you guys, he’s underrated IMO
He finally gets his shot. If he can reel in his highs and lows he can be good.
Why would you want him to reel in his highs??
Look man I watched the 7OT LSU game. You don't wanna live through that shit more than once a year. That's a "oh yeah I remember the decade I saw that game" kind of situation.
Happy they pulled the trigger on a QB. We need a backup, and its never bad to have a project on the roster too. Been a long time since we've had one
I sincerely can’t even think of a time we have ever had a true project in my 30 years of fandom.
It’s always been first round picks and an endless parade of post prime veterans.
Kinda exciting even though it’s a long shot he’ll pan out.
-Kirk Cousins, probably
Lowkey think mond will be a good QB in the NFL if given the time to develop.
Sitting behind Kirk is a pretty damn good situation
Homeboy built like a bionicle
Kirk in shambles
KIRK IS KILL?
Best overall: DE
Vikings needs: DE
John Randle: I PICK QB CUZ IMMA THE ONLY DE YOU WILL EVER NEED.
Bless his eyeshadowed face
He kinda had that Ultimate Warrior thing going
He was a DT
Lots of people forget this because he was so good at sacking the QB.
I got a Cameo from him for my dad for Christmas last year. It was great. He's definitely one of the Viking goats.
New man on the Minnesota Vikings
I don't know why everybody hates this? I like Kirk but he isn't good enough to warrant absolutely no competition or pressure from a back up QB. And in this case Mond is likely going to be sitting a year or 2 anyways and has a decent amount of potential which fits with this team's time table with Kirk. This is a good move rather than rolling out Mannion as back up for another year who provides you very little.
You like that?
I know Booger knows absolutely nothing because he just said he takes too many sacks yet Mond was sacked 7 times all season last year 😂😂😂
I mean, why not, we got plenty of 3rds, we need a backup qb, and he could be an eventual starter so we don’t have to pay Kirk again.
Fond of Mond
NANI what’s with Kirk?
We saw how the Love pick motivated Rodgers so we're trying the same thing, lock in your Kirk Cousins MVP bets before Vegas has a chance to react
Rip Kirk szn
Cousins clock is ticking. If they don't win the SB in the next two years then he's gone.
..we got our guy? :/
Vikings never take mid round QBs and I’ve been wanting that for years! Excited to see what the kid can do
Kellen Mond got the baddies at the party shit
All I need to know about the guy 😎
someone tell Julie
I want to thank /u/youvebeengreggd for both preparing and hyping me for this unexpected eventuality
Like the pick
I love this pick
Simms had him higher than Lance AND Fields. Low risk move and if he turns into something great in a few years theyre geniuses
Our backup was absolute shit too, so this is a high upside pick made from capital we stole from the jets
Just imagine this division 5 years from now with Love, Mond, Fields, and Goff.
5 years? At some point next season is a real possibility
So do people just lose the ability to read when announcing a pick at the NFL draft?
*I was elected to lead, not to read*
Speaking publicly is pretty weird if you’re not used to it.
Public speaking (even if it’s just reading) can be really hard for people. Guarantee we wouldn’t see so many fumbles if this was remote. Speaking on a stage can be tough.
Love this pick. Give him 2 years, Kirk will be gone and he will step up.
Doesn't look like Kirk will take us all the way, so a big upside QB here is good. We have 3 more 3rds to fill other needs.
"If I get replaced, I get replaced." -Kirk, Probably
At least Kirk has his sleepnumber.
Worst case: good backup. Best case: franchise qb. I like it
That is far from the worst case. Worst case is he has an affair with Julie and then Kirk leaves, followed by Jefferson and Thielen as the Vikings don’t resoundly denounce Kellen’s actions. Cook retires and Zim’s eye stuff comes back. This leads to him retiring and we bring back Norv Turner. Rick leaves out of spite and goes on to become GM of the Packers, successfully bringing Rodgers back from Jeopardy fame to win every Super Bowl ever.
Mother of god
Do you kiss your mother with that filthy mouth of yours?
Kirk to the broncos.
Fuck i have a bad feeling about this
Not the worst pick tbh — I mean who even was the Vikings backup QB? That alone makes this a decent pick
reminder that chris simms called this dude better than justin fields wtf
To be fair, no one knows. Fields and Lawrence could be huge busts, the tape says he's not better than fields, but who knows.
I love this pick for the Vikings, has a ton of upside and might let them get out from Cousins contract in the next year or two. I'd rather have him than Trask
Kirk come to Denver
Are we just the home for abused Quarterbacks now?
Texans fans about to end quite the edging session.
I don’t mind the pick. I’m pretty sure they just said the Vikings have four picks this round so maybe this could have waited?
Guess the Justin Fields rumor was true.
This is fine, Kirk is still gonna start and play out the rest of his contract
